Alfred Chandler (15 Sep.1918 - 09 May 2007)
Alfred Chandler died on May 9 in Cambridge, Mass. Chandler’s famous book, “The Visible Hand: The Managerial Revolution in American Business” (1977), won the Pulitzer Price for history and Columbia University’s prestigious Bancroft Prize . His thesis was that managers, functioning as a “visible hand,” had replaced the “invisible hand” of Adam Smith’s free market in allocating resources. Dr. Chandler retired in 1989 from Harvard Business School after a long career in academia.
